Tesla Energy Ventures Limited, the energy division of the American tech giant Tesla, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, has applied for a license to supply electricity in the United Kingdom. This marks the company’s first such move outside the United States, according to news agency AFP.
The license application was announced on the website of the UK energy regulator, Ofgem.
Tesla Energy currently supplies electricity to customers in the US state of Texas and specializes in solar energy and battery storage solutions. In 2020, the company obtained a license to generate electricity in the UK, primarily through solar panels, but without direct sales to end consumers.
Tesla Energy now aims to start supplying electricity to households and businesses across England, Scotland, and Wales as early as next year.
This latest development comes at a challenging time for Musk’s company, which is experiencing a global decline in vehicle sales due to increased competition and negative public reaction to Musk’s collaboration with former US President Donald Trump.
